I’ve got first-day-of-school anxiety even though I don’t technically have any classroom work this semester. It’s confusing reading fb status updates about people’s first day of class. I keep having mini panic episodes of “OMG! Forgot to go to school today!” Poor, silly, confused brain. Plus, I just got an email from the new president of the Feline Medicine Club wanting to do an officer meeting. I’m technically an Event Coordinator (whatever the hell that actually means), but I’ve only stayed on as an officer for the past 2 years so the club wouldn’t be disbanded for having too few officers as no one wants to be an officer for it. I don’t want to go to school for 15 minutes to talk about activities that I want to avoid being involved in but I also don’t want to be an ass. We’ll see what the other officers say. At least one other is in a similar position of not really wanting to be an officer but staying on for the charity of the club.
To curb my school neuroses, I went through the syllabus of my online class, Preventative Medicine, and entered due dates for assignments and quizzes into my Google calender. Goal is to finish all of September’s stuff before I go do vacation stuff in 2ish weeks. Whee. Then, this week I’ll try to re-email my externship sites and try to get some dates set up for those as the rotation signup/registration thingy is apparently to open mid-Sept. At least I know what to expect from it, as I did all this stuff last year. I am very pleased that my externship sites agreed to hold my externships for me.
Time for more state fair food pictures! Here goes day 2 (of 5! Yep, we’re nuts!).
Started out my day with an almond croissant and glass of milk from French Meadow Bakery, which is also a real bakery in the Twin Cities.

Quite impressed by how they managed to keep the quality so high while the weird fair environment. They did seem to have a damn good kitchen, though. Almond things are my favorite :)
Grump alpaca (which I did not eat!)

I do kind of wish I had used one of my little point and shoot cameras instead of my camera phone. Camera phone is lazy and does not want to focus on anything.
Pork chop on a stick

Not as good as previous years. Kind of dry. Wah wah
Then Aaron met up with us and the real eating began! He and I are good at stuffing our bellies together :)
Mini Donut Beer!

We’re both fans of novelty beer and this one was surprisingly good, even more so than the S’mores beer we had the other day. It was a flavorful lighter beer and they served it in a glass with a cinnamon and sugar rim, which is pretty much the only thing that gave it a mini donut quality. If they sold this in liquor stores, I’d probably buy it.
Indeed Brewery beer battered onion rings with an amazing hot mustard dipping sauce

We needed an onion ring fix and the beer they were battered in is made in a brewery a few blocks from my house.
Izzy’s ice cream

The weird flavor of the year was Jello Salad which was apparently lime and cranberry flavored with mini marshmallows. It was weird but definitely in a weird way. We also saw that they had a mini donut batter crunch flavor, so we tried that too. It was tasty but a bit underwhelming. They also give you a mini “Izzy” scoop with every full-sized scoop, so we also tried salted caramel and lingonberry, both of which were delicious.
Gizmo!

Another item off the Andrew Zimmern list. A State Fair classic that neither Aaron nor I had ever tried. It was a combination of ground beef and Italian sausage with red sauce and melted cheese in a bun. Pretty tasty!
SnoRibbon from Blue Moon Diner

I believe this was a new item from the Blue Moon Diner this year. Kind of like a mixture between shaved ice, sorbet, and a sno cone. They had different flavors every day. This one was grapefruit with a ginger, fish-shaped cookie, frozen strawberries, and maybe a mango sauce? I can’t remember. It was delicious, though.
Korean BBQ style pork collar with kimchi pickles from Famous Dave’s

Also new this year. It was pretty tasty, though Aaron and I were both wishing we had some extra sauce to dip in because it was pretty tasty. Definitely very fatty meat, but it worked well rather than being so fatty it was disgusting. The pickles really made it, though. I want a giant jar of them! They were perfectly spicy and crunchy.
Tom Thumb mini donuts (apparently Aaron enjoys snorting his fair food??)

Since we’d already had 2 mini donut-themed foods, we thought we’d best have the real deal to top it all off. These particular ones were recommended by Andrew Zimmern. They were tasty, but I don’t know if they’re my favorite kind. Someday, when I’m really ambitious and extra gluttonous, I want to try all the types of mini donuts and actually figure out which I like best.
Deep fried baklava on a stick with chocolate sauce and powdered sugar

Holy shit! This. It was new this year and I was suspicious of it. I mean, baklava is so freaking decadent by itself. You’d think that battering it, deep frying it, and adding freaking chocolate sauce would just be a really poor life choice. OK, maybe it is a poor life choice to eat one, but it is a delicious one. The honey gets all warm and molten and mixes with the deep fried goodness and the chocolate enhances it all. If you ever see something like this, just get one. Quite possibly my new favorite fair food.
A trio of yum

Finished the day off with fries, a Caprese salad on a stick on a bed of some kind of wild rice salad thing, and a mac and cheese with fish of some sort and yum cheese and corn and…things..I can’t remember! But it was all good and a nice way to end the day of gluttony.
Holy shit, Aaron and I ate so much that day. I’m not sure if I should be ashamed or proud. Going with proud :P
