L&D in Baby #3

I had to go to L&D on Sunday night. I had been experiencing contractions for about 24 hours and no amount of rest or water or relaxing were stopping them. I ended up being monitored for about 2 hours, but they said since I was still very early contractions, especially if they weren’t strong, wouldn’t show up… and they didn’t. That was a little frustrating because I was still feeling them the entire time I was there. My temp was a little elevated so they did cultures and a UA to rule out infection - all came back negative so still no idea why I was elevated. I wish they would have done a wbc and some liver enzymes while I was there (due to some gallbladder/liver pain I have been having and some itching), but I forgot to ask until after I left. I received fluid and a bit later the contractions stopped and I was sent home. Thankfully cervix was completely closed and everything looked good. Babies heart rate was 145 and all of my vitals looked fine.

I did meet an awesome resident while I was there and I opened up to him a bit about my fear of hospitals. He was so nice and talked to me for a really long time.. in fact, he even convinced me to set up an appointment with his team. I told him about how they attempted to give me an episiotomy with Beau (my 31 week, 3 pound baby - without any pain meds during that labor) and how they forcibly pulled my placenta out by the cord just a few moments after he was born. I said I was so traumatized by his birth I would rather be anywhere but there to have my child. He said he completely understood and knew those were inappropriate things to do. He said his team, though not naturopaths, were very anti intervention and were working towards backing up from some of the routine practices of most hospitals. I loved that he was so honest with me and he did tell me I could refuse absolutely anything I wanted (even the torturous uterine “massage” after delivery - even said if someone did it without my consent it was assault and very illegal). So… I made an appointment with his team and am excited to have a “plan” incase I do not make it to term and am unable to birth at home. I did tell him that if I made it to a point where I was comfortable at home that was my plan and he did not freak out or say anything negative, just told me he could not legally recommend or support that, but he did say he could tell I was well educated on the subject and knew I would never intentionally harm my child. He said he could tell how far I would go to protect my baby and that is all that was important to him. I was so impressed with the entire experience and honestly did not expect to since I have had such bad experiences there in the past. It is the closest hospital to me and does have an excellent NICU and high risk team though and if I did have to deliver before term I feel a lot more comfortable knowing there are people like him around. I do feel a great relief and a sense of peace now and I know Adam does as well. It is also cheaper due to the fact that my midwife care was out of network and not fully covered by insurance.
