Awareness in Weekly

I was talking to Rachel yesterday and she mentioned that she read somewhere that November is incontinence awareness month and that she wanted to do something to be supportive of people with incontinence problems, like me.

I asked her how she planned to do that and she suggested that she might go a few days wearing diapers so she could see what I go through. At first I was a little offended by that idea. It’s like spending a day in a wheelchair to see what it’s like to be handicapped. In the end, you really just don’t know what it’s like because you can get up and walk.

But then I started thinking about her really having to deal with the inconvenience of diapers and wanting her to experience that. I told her she needed to do it for at least a week, really wear them 24/7 and not pee into a toilet the whole time. I told her she would have to take vacation time from the pool where she lifeguards because they don’t allow diapers in the pool. I reminded her that she’ll have to carry diapers with her everywhere she goes, and have to deal with the humiliation of changing in public restrooms.

She seemed completely intimidated by the idea when I was done, but still willing to do it. We haven’t finished agreeing to all the details, but I’m going to make sure she does it, and that she hates it.
