You know how people say that bad things often happen in three’s? Well, now I believe it. First of all, not too long ago, our dishwasher broke and so we had to go buy a new one. That was a totally unexpected thing that happened out of the blue. Next, we found out Cody has a cavity between his front two teeth. He’s seeing a specialist in a week because he’s not very cooperative when it comes to opening his mouth for someone he doesn’t know. I was told he may have to be put to sleep to have the cavity filled. Which does not exactly give me a good feeling :(

And then....the worst thing of the 3 things happens. I took my car for an oil change on Saturday afternoon and was actually excited about it because I got to go alone and I was just going to relax with a tea and my book and enjoy the rare break from the kids. Shortly afterwards the mechanic shocks me by telling me that the only place I should be driving my car is to the scrapyard. Whaaaaaaaat? Yes my car, a Toyota Echo, is old. My dad bought it for me 13 years ago because I was in college and he didn’t trust the car I had at the time to get me to school and back safely. He told me at the time he would lease it for me for a few years and then I’d have to either give it back or buy it. And then as a surprise graduation present he paid the balance on the car for me. Awesome, I know. But anyways, I have had my present job where I commute to work for the past 7 years and over the last 13 years I have put 465,000 kilometres on my Echo. So even though it was a shock that its time is finally up, I definitely can’t say that I didn’t get value out of this car. Especially considering it was free! lol.

What happened with the car is that it has gradually been rusting for years and the mechanic showed me while the car was up on the hoist that the frame is so badly rusted that sometime in the not so distant future it is going to collapse and that could cause me to have a serious accident. I had no idea it was that badly rusted since I never look at the car from underneath. So, that’s that I suppose. We have to get another car. Definitely not the greatest news but we knew it was going to happen one of these days. I am an optimist so I am just grateful that the car lasted until now when I am back at work making more money and I’m also grateful that someone informed us of this and so none of us was hurt. The kids don’t go in that car anyways but still, Mike and I could’ve definitely been hurt.

So, I honestly had no idea what we should do. Do we look around for something used? How many kilometres is too high? What year is too old? How do we know it’s not going to end up being a hunk of junk? I’m just not knowledgable about this sort of thing so I asked my brothers and parents for advice and Mike and I have decided we’re going to buy a 2015 Nissan Micra. It’s a small, compact car that has a hatchback, is brand new and the financing on it is very reasonable. It sucks to have another expense but also will be awesome to have a brand new car! Yay! lol. I test drove it on Saturday and it seemed fine. You know, regular, small car type of deal. Mike and I are both going to use it to commute to work so we just wanted something small that’s good on gas. We will have one car seat for Cody in there for when Mike takes him to hockey games in the fall/winter (he has season tickets to OHL games). So yeah....we’re making the best of it. Mike took tomorrow off so we’re going to hopefully sign the papers and everything and hopefully get it soon since this we are both going to have to drive our van to work. I’m nervous about making such a big decision so quickly but this sounds good to me since we don’t really have the money to buy a cheap, used $5,000 car or something like that.
