august 23 in twenty-eight

Today it was hotter than it has been for most of the entire summer, and it was muggy, so we decided to take G to one of the dog shelters in the area, "just to look." Bad idea.

We got there and it just broke my heart. I know a lot of the dogs have a chance, but there was a mastiff/pit bull there that I'm sure will have a hard time getting adopted, and two rooms full of cats that are just screwed. It made me cry.

There were two beautiful weimaraners there who were eight. They were only able to be adopted as a pair. C has mentioned for a while that he would eventually like a weimaraner, and I've been talking about getting a dog myself, but we didn't really see ourselves adopting more than one dog right now, and not an older dog. But, I don't know...something about those dogs. We were both drawn to them. So we're going back tomorrow and if they're still there (they probably will be; they were brought in August 3rd), we're going to see if we can adopt them.

I figure, they probably won't get adopted easily...there are two and they are mature dogs. It's also not likely to be a huge commitment, since they only live on average ten to twelve years. I'm not saying I'm looking forward to them being dead; I think if we do adopt them it will be very sad to say goodbye in a couple years, but two to four good years is better than what they're likely looking at otherwise. And, I don't know...they tugged on my heart strings. They are beautiful, too.

So, we'll see.

It's crazy, though. We already have a ten-year-old dog, four cats, and two ferrets. Oh, and did I mention that my sister and her husband might be moving in with us for a week or two when their house sells? They also have two large dogs (but they are both crated so I'm thinking it's doable). It's going to be an adjustment, for sure.

Do you think I'm absolutely insane? Because you wouldn't believe it from this, but I don't consider myself to be an animal person. Maybe that's incorrect.
