Suggestion Box, October Edition in Suggestion Box

First of all, a welcome to all the recent newcomers! I thought that What's-his-name was coming back to fix that other site, but the recent entries on here seem to suggest otherwise. There seems to be a wide range of emotion outpouring from new visitors, anywhere between admiration and a mix of anger and horror. But that's OK. Feel free to explore Prosebox and come to your own conclusions.

As most old-timers can tell you (waaaaay back in August? I think I only started to think about making this site in May), I'm constantly adding new stuff. It's not like the old traditional method of creating a major release and withholding everything until then. I find that pushing out very small changes on a regular basis works great for web applications, so that's my style. The place has changed a lot during its short life span.

Since a lot of suggestions are out of date, I decided it's time for a new suggestion box entry. Things currently on my radar:

  • Improve bookmarks with a view based on individual users and their most recent updates
  • Navigating between entries - it's currently a little wonky and inefficient
  • Terms of service (I always procrastinate on the stuff that isn't as fun)
  • Tagging in entries
  • Searching on all public site content
  • A "like" or "upvote" button to show you've read the entry (or possibly comment) and enjoyed it.

Have a lovely day.

I have a tiny non-important suggestion. There's this weird line next to where our user quotes are and I find it annoying as it serves no purpose I can see. Also the first line of the quote is slightly indented and looks a bit off kilter. I told you these are unimportant! lol

simple mind Cat Mommy ⋅ October 23, 2013

That "weird line" you see is supposed to be a stylized block quote. Perhaps it doesn't translate as well in the dark theme as it does on white. First line indent should be an easy fix if it's what I think it is.

Teflon Superhero October 23, 2013

Ability to privatize an entry! :D

Cat Mommy Teflon Superhero ⋅ October 23, 2013

You can. Just move it to a book that's set to private. :)

Teflon Superhero Cat Mommy ⋅ October 23, 2013

wait, we can move entries between books now?? Did I miss something?? LOL

Cat Mommy Teflon Superhero ⋅ October 23, 2013

Yes, yes you did, lol. In the edit entry/write entry page there's a spot to pick which book you want and to make a once public entry private simply choose a book that's set to private and save. Voila!

Teflon Superhero Cat Mommy ⋅ October 23, 2013

AWYYYYIIIIIIIIISSSSSS! thank you!!

Cat Mommy Teflon Superhero ⋅ October 23, 2013

laughing You're welcome.

Deleted user Teflon Superhero ⋅ October 23, 2013

You can also privatize entries in books that aren't private by using "Save as Draft".

Kimber October 23, 2013

How about an option to privatize a note we've left someone if, like a dumbass, we accidentally made it public?

simple mind Kimber ⋅ October 23, 2013

Ah yes. I forgot to mention that temporarily deleting comments you need to fix is on the to-do list. Maybe even temporary edit and make private functionality.

Phade October 23, 2013

I'd like to be able to put a photo on the front page of my BOX (like you can for every book). But that's really a small quibble.

Cat Mommy Phade ⋅ October 23, 2013

I kind of like this idea too. Although with the current set-up I can't imagine it wouldn't look slightly awkward.

Deleted user Phade ⋅ October 25, 2013

If you mean the "avatar", I think that this might get confusing for your readers - never knowing that they are reading the one and same person, because the different books have different pictures?

Phade Deleted user ⋅ October 26, 2013

No I don't mean my avatar. I mean, being able to put just a random photo on the cover page of my prosebox, much like how we're currently able to put a photo on the front page of each book.

Linda October 23, 2013

I'm happy with what you've done and what you propose.

The REAL DiaryMaster October 23, 2013

I always procrastinate on the stuff that's- I always procrastinate on the stuff. By the way; how's my site doin'?

simple mind The REAL DiaryMaster ⋅ October 23, 2013

Your site is doing swell. People are reeling from the speed it offers!

The REAL DiaryMaster October 23, 2013

Also, I'd like to see more database errors.

Deleted user The REAL DiaryMaster ⋅ October 29, 2013

cough, cough! C'mon, you just made my morning tea come out of my nose (and it was hot)

Leanne 🌈 October 23, 2013

edit a comment please I be the queen of typos.

Lepetit pumpkinesque October 23, 2013

I'd love a little bio section so I can be like "oh this idiot lives in _ and likes _?! This is MY kind of idiot!!" Or "uhm yeah NO thanks"

Deleted user Lepetit pumpkinesque ⋅ October 25, 2013

Yeah this would be kinda cool.

JadedAngel68 October 23, 2013

I wish we could personalize PB more like with background colors and effects such as that. Also to be able to delete a comment or be able to privatize it if someone doesn't privatize it when they leave it. Also that bookmarks would bold when they have updated and unbold when you have read them.

simple mind JadedAngel68 ⋅ October 23, 2013

Here's an example of what I have in mind for future customization:

Nifty background

Kate simple mind ⋅ October 25, 2013

No.

simple mind Kate ⋅ October 25, 2013

I should add that I plan to let people have a setting to NOT load customized backgrounds when that is available.

bookbean simple mind ⋅ October 25, 2013

That is nifty!

Newzlady October 23, 2013

suggestion on the "I was here and read this entry" button. Sometimes on Facebook I want to show that I read a status when I'm at a loss for words because the person has shared some bad news, or just expressed a very emotional sentiment. I don't always want to say I LIKE it, know what I mean? OD lets you sign a blank note and just leaves your name, which is often just what I want to do and I (used to) do that a lot.

simple mind Newzlady ⋅ October 23, 2013

You actually have that option here already.

cricket_factor October 23, 2013

Oh, thank you so much for working on the bookmarks' view! Yay! Thank you!!!

Deleted user October 24, 2013

I appreciate the thought and care you are taking as you build the site. Well done, m'lord.

Teflon Superhero October 24, 2013

Ok I just thought of something else and it's not even a gripe, just a question of would it be possible to do (I know it runs completely different on mobile so I wouldn't want any suggestions to mess that up)

My monitor is wide screen, the space around it doesn't bother me at all, but the bar being on the left and the entry being kinda centered on the right makes it kind of difficult to read the entries (on my computer, nothing wrong on my phone)

I don't know if this is just because I'm accustom to reading left to right that it throws me off or what, but is there any way there might be an option eventually added in to let users choose which side of the screen the options sit on? Like left/right?

I have no idea why them being there makes it difficult to read, and like I said I'm not like sharpening the points on my pitchforks over it or adding oily rags to the torches. Just a curiosity question, really. I can adjust if it'd be too terrible to implement and especially if any changes to that would mess up the mobile version.

Deleted user October 24, 2013

What's the view on user blocking?

I got a rather judgemental and opinionated comment a while ago and would have liked the option to outright stop that person from being able to comment. I haven't really written here since because there aren't enough familiar faces here to warrant going friends only. And I don't necessarily want to go friends only for the sake of excluding one person.

Looking forward to improved bookmarks page. It bugs me I can't see who I've bookmarked unless they've written recently.

Emmy Lou Deleted user ⋅ October 27, 2013

Same here, I would love a block button! I want to have public entries but there is a user on here who I don't want to see my stuff.

ebin. October 24, 2013

common interests/circles!

also, maybe an "older" button to see more older recent entries... there really aren't that many to go through on the main page. xx,

km October 24, 2013

I'd love to be able to reply to a note directly from the comments inbox without having to go to the entry.

Deleted user km ⋅ October 25, 2013

Yes me too!

Finn October 24, 2013

You're doing a great job, m'lord. Thanks for everything. Keep up the great work.

OneSassyLadyNKY October 24, 2013

I too would like to be able to block people from reading and/or noting without having to go "friends only" if that could be possible?

Anaiss October 24, 2013

Thanks for all your hard work and for being receptive to suggestion. A lot of us are very loyal to "the other place" and change is hard, but at the end of the day, I think many, like me, are grateful that this site is here, and understand that this is its OWN place with its own identity and style... it's good to learn to adapt and embrace something new!

EvequeFou October 24, 2013

That black box behind the name looks super-awkward to me. Being able to replace that with a background picture would be a good personalization point. You'd just have to tint it a little to make the text still readable. However, being able to pick a picture that sits well with both themes might be a challenge....

simple mind EvequeFou ⋅ October 24, 2013

This is an example of the future customization I had in mind, nothing to obscure text:

http://www.prosebox.net/entry/14288/nothing-to-see-here-nothing-at-all/

MissMeg simple mind ⋅ October 25, 2013

LOVE THIS! Customization, yet still easy to read. Will we be able to view each other's individual photos/backgrounds on their own pages too? I love going to each diary page and feeling like I'm in their space and personality, which is what I really liked about OD..

simple mind MissMeg ⋅ October 25, 2013

Right... the idea would be to have backgrounds customized for others to see, combined with the theme preference of the user reading it (with the option to disable backgrounds if you don't want to see them, have a slow connection, etc).

MissMeg simple mind ⋅ October 25, 2013

Awesome, thanks for the reply! Definitely looking forward to the customization aspect. Also, totally random, but any chance we could have square vs. round profile pics/avatars? Round seems to cut off the edges and it would allow for more creativity with our pictures or graphics that way. Just the designer in me talking. :)

Deleted user MissMeg ⋅ October 27, 2013

Maybe square with round corners?

Newzlady October 24, 2013

Deleted user October 25, 2013

I've suggested this before, but not sure what you think - To have the ability to read a person's entries in chronological order, despite the books they've placed their writings in. Reason being that there are some people whose writings I devour and like to keep uptodate with every single one of their entries. Also, my sister and I keep in touch via our diaries as though we were writing letters to each other, and we do this with each other.

Deleted user Deleted user ⋅ November 03, 2013

I think you can do this already by clicking the "Current Author" tab above the entry.

Avalon October 25, 2013

What about showing a snippet of the Latest Entries on the front page, rather than just the title and author? It may encourage more "front page" browsing if readers have an idea of what the entry is about. Often, titles are just one word or the date or something like that.

Emmy Lou Avalon ⋅ October 27, 2013

upvote

Kate October 25, 2013

Is there a way to populate everyone's bookmark list with the site updates box? I have seen people freaking out about things that you are aware of or have already fixed, so it's obvious they don't read your entries. In the alternative, maybe an announcement on the front page that there are site updates?

bookbean October 25, 2013

I am not getting the hand of Markdown. I'm googling everything I can just to resize pictures and position the alignment of my text (still can't figure it out), but I'm coming to the conclusion that we're not just going to have a lot of formatting options. I understand the reasoning behind this, the neon yellow and pink combinations and blinky backgrounds, but what of us who are responsible with their font and photo choices? :( Should I just be searching for a better reference of Markdown's syntax, or is this as good as it gets?

simple mind bookbean ⋅ October 25, 2013

Be sure to check out my Tips and Tricks book (linked from side menu under Help) if you haven't already. The first couple of entries give a more basic intro to the basic stuff in Markdown. HTML is also allowed (a limited set) if you're more familiar with that. HTML also gives you a little more flexibility, if you're interested in alignment. For example, you can add classes "text-left", "text-right", or "text-center" to most elements (if I remember correctly).

Maybe I'll play with alignment a bit myself and write another Tips and Tricks entry.

bookbean simple mind ⋅ October 25, 2013

Thank you. HTML is definitely my language of choice, so I'll be looking for how I can use that with Markdown. I look forward to your new customization options!!

AnOrangeZebra October 26, 2013

Allow us to customize our colors!

perfunctory October 26, 2013

Is there a way to accept only private notes?

Great work on the site! I am in love with how it looks on my phone, which is a biggie for me since I do a lot of reading/noting on my phone & tablet.

Silverkitty October 26, 2013

Pretty please can we have a basic choice of colour palette for our diary. We don't really need the whole shebang of individually customised backgrounds, but say a 'pink' and a 'green' etc. instead of the grey.

Deleted user October 27, 2013

May have been suggested already (and I know this is a beta site) but if you could incorporate a way to download our entries for safe keeping that would be a plus. Thanks for listening.

Katren...In Conclusion October 27, 2013

My McAfee Site Advisor keeps warning me that it has blocked unsafe content. Something in the ads?

simple mind Katren...In Conclusion ⋅ October 27, 2013

Yeah, probably the ads. They're provided by Google, but I suppose even Google is prone to accidentally providing malicious ads. Still planning to to have a subscription ad-free version when I get it out of beta.

Katren...In Conclusion simple mind ⋅ October 27, 2013

Wow. Thanks. I can't get over getting replies.

🌈 JustWillow 🦄 October 28, 2013

The ability to change an entry from public or members/friends only to private would be awesome :) Or maybe I just haven't figured out yet how to do it?

Thanks, great job on the site, really loving it here so far! It's a definite improvement over the broken that OD became :)

Deleted user October 28, 2013

Because of the influx of new users and resulting increased usage, entries cycle through the recent entries list very quickly, often in under an hour. This limits the ability to browse for interesting entry entry titles by people you have not already bookmarked. I suspect that hits on an entry fall off sharply just as soon as it falls off the bottom of "latest entries" list. If true, this suggests that interaction and eyeball-hours can be increased fairly easily.

simple mind Deleted user ⋅ October 28, 2013

Enjoy my latest improvement! Now you can browse the latest 300 people to write entries. :)

Deleted user simple mind ⋅ October 29, 2013

Thank you, thank you! Now the site's perfect, you're done. (Just kidding-- note previews, then it'll be perfect ;-)

Deleted user October 29, 2013

With regards to bookmarks-- what would be really awesome is if the page looked like the current bookmarks by user but each user then had an expanding drop down menu where you could see the latest entries from all their other books. What would be even more awesome is if you could then scroll through their previous entry titles for each book (like at the top of this page) and the cherry on the top would be if unread entries showed up in bold.

Deleted user October 30, 2013

Any way we'll be able to customize backgrounds here some time soon?

aglow October 31, 2013

I would looooooove if, when I replied to a comment on an entry, the page didn't reload after my reply saved & pull me all the way back up to the top.

simple mind aglow ⋅ October 31, 2013

Funny you should mention that. I was planning to do that at some point. Because you're right, it would be awesone.

aglow simple mind ⋅ October 31, 2013

I mean, it's a fun trip and all, BUT CONVENIENCE. (I totally love that the feature of being able to click straight to a comment you want to reply to exists, though.)

kalakri November 02, 2013

First, I want to say that I love this site. I'm an OD transplant. Thank you! Second, do you have a plus feature? Yet? I'd love that.. I thought I saw ads on the site, maybe not as many on the mobile version. I'd pay to have ads removed, if that was an option in the future. Is there a way to donate to the site? So far, like I said, I love this place. It makes me want to write again. Keep up the good work!

simple mind kalakri ⋅ November 02, 2013

Thank you! Not yet, but there's a premium subscription feature in the works. Ad free, with some bells and whistles. Not sure when exactly but hopefully soon. I just want to make sure I have a good trouble ticket system in place, and terms of service and such. So that's what I'm working towards. :)

Deleted user November 03, 2013

customizationnnnn!

I was super reluctant to come here at first, simply because of it not having an option for customization.

to me, keeping a diary is primarily a way to write down my feelings, thoughts, secrets etc. having a space I feel is my very own is imperative to this.

also I really dislike the circular pictures as they cut part of your picture off D: ..maybe an option to have a square picture or a circular picture would work? I know it wouldn't look as tidy but to have the choice..

the above aside, decided to come here simply bc of the community and I am happy I did. ^^

ps; is it possible to make entries friends only?

Deleted user November 03, 2013

ignore the ps bit.. I was being slothlike! I found the solution XD

oh I thought of another suggestion!! I would love to see mood icons, like you can select a mood you are feeling. I always wished for this feature on od but it never happened cries

sorry to say so much. I don't mean to sound critical; I'm actually excited lol. I didn't think I would like it here but I do. blush

Dictynna November 03, 2013

Is it possible to enable time zone selection? Right now it says I have posted at 2:30 am and stuff, but that just simply ain't true. :)

aceytray November 04, 2013

Importing entries from OTHER SITES that shall not be named?

Deleted user November 05, 2013

I'm really enjoying prosebox so far and how it works so smoothly. :)

I was wondering, if you are going to implement https? I think one of the drawbacks of OD was the constant "site is down due to hacker attack" and one felt rather insecure there over time, after all some of the content one posts is rather personal.

Deleted user November 05, 2013

Random one, but perhaps change orange publish entry button to green publish entry button? I always want to hit save draft instead of publish cause I see orange button and think oh no no no no, orange is colour of warning, warning of bad stuff, must not press the orange button- Oh wait, I do need to press the orange button.

Avalon November 05, 2013

If we update or revise an entry title, does it show up again in the Bookmarks feed?

Thanks for all the hard work you're doing on the site! I'm happy I made the switch.

Deleted user November 05, 2013

I joined in August but didn't start posting until recently. I wasn't writing much anywhere, actually. At any rate, I'm coming into the game a bit late on the suggestions, so my apologies if this has already been presented and addressed. I think it would be beneficial to have some sort of category option, which, I suppose is akin to tags. I hate to compare anything to OD, but I'm thinking in terms of "circles". Easily searchable categories for whatever content it contains.

As a Redditor, the (current) inability to upvote is killing me, ha. All in due time though.

Super awesome work, and thanks man.

🌈 JustWillow 🦄 November 06, 2013

Is there a way to change the password I use to log in to the site? If not, may I suggest making that an option in settings? Thanks :)

simple mind 🌈 JustWillow 🦄 ⋅ November 06, 2013

I still need to do that. For now, you can log out and use the "Forgot Password" link as a workaround to reset it. But yeah, need to add that so you can do it while logged in.

🌈 JustWillow 🦄 simple mind ⋅ November 06, 2013

Ooooh thanks, I didn't think of using the reset lol, problem solved :)

Mermy Cullen November 06, 2013

I like to change the date on my entries like I can on other sites...

Lefty November 07, 2013

I may very well be a crazy old lady who just hasn't figured this out yet... but how do I change my password to log into Prosebox? Is there a way that I've just missed? Thank you!!!

simple mind Lefty ⋅ November 07, 2013

I actually need to add a change password feature, but for now you can just log out and then use the "Forgot Password" link, which will email you a link to reset it.

Lefty simple mind ⋅ November 07, 2013

That worked like a charm... Thanks!
