She left a trail of the bleeding stones, those chalky things with the blood-red fungus, pebbles like molten eggs smoothed by some river long dry, she left them face-up and stark against the green. She left them behind for anyone to see, for all the places she went, she took a piece and left a piece.

But this isn't a story about her yet. So I wait.
