My mother’s sudden death caused a great stir in the town. Within 24 hours of her death many of the neighbours had paid their condolences. There were flowers of course, which she would have hated. I remember the grandchildren asking where she had gone. My father just shrugged his shoulders. I presumed this was shock.
The youngest, Keir, out of pure curiosity, continued the inquiry, the vagueness of my father’s reply unsatisfactory. Though I think being sent to ask his mother didn’t satisfy him either.
The funeral service was a very fine one. Before us was lunch with the family members who made the trip. Reminiscing. Laughing. Some tears. At the end of the day, came a long slow plunge into a morass of grief. To this day, it remains a mystery where she went exactly.
