“She bit me.”
She had bit him. She backed up to me and sat at my feet. Her lip showed small teeth as she growled.
“Come.”
He stayed in the shadows.
“C’mon boy, I ain’t talking to the dog, she’s already heeled.”
He rustled the leaves a bit.
“Christ, boy, if she wanted you to stay bit you’d know it.”
He shuffled into the firelight, ashen and yellow as old horse teeth and small as a cockroach. She growled as he came closer but her chin was almost on her forepaws. I nodded to a bowl and spoon.
The boy had to be real hungry or tetched.
Hell, who wasn’t?
The boy tipped the iron pot and shoveled a few wild onions and gravy into the bowl. He ate like the dog did; fast enough to fool the taste buds into letting it pass.
When he was done he tore a bit of sage from the ground and rubbed it in the bowl.
“Am I dead?” the kid asked.
I smiled. My dog blew a bark into the dust.
“Shush girl,” I said rubbing her neck “This is the best part. I like it, it’s good.”
