This is just a warning to visitors: if you stay in the tourist areas of NYC, it will be EXPENSIVE. Not only the hotels, but the food, the "shopping on the street" (and NO none of that stuff is REAL), everything.
You can take a self originated bus tour of the city... hop on AND off as many times as you like with a METROCARD - about $30 for a week!!! Not a day. And if you want an "insider's" view of the city coordinate with Big Apple Greeters: http://bigapplegreeter.org/
A coffee and a bottle of juice will NOT cost $5 in other parts of the city!!
Century 21 is NOT the best place for discounted clothing!!
There are FREE tours of the city: http://www.freetoursbyfoot.com/
Yes, it can become expensive to live here, but if you know your way around, it does NOT have to be expensive to visit.

Wow. This is wonderful information. Will you post it on Facebook too? And repost here too from time to time. I don't know if I will ever make it to NYC but I've always wanted to visit - I did once VERY briefly.
