The Golden Globe Awards is an annual awards ceremony for excellence in film and television hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).
The ceremony was held for the 80th time in its history, but this year’s edition was particularly noteworthy because of the racial exclusion scandals that have plagued the organization in recent times.
In 2021, a Los Angeles Times article revealed that none of the HFPA’s 87 members were black, sparking widespread criticism and calls for change.
The Golden Globe Awards ceremony is typically broadcast by NBC, but the network decided not to do so in 2021. As a result of the scandal, several well-known people and organizations, including actor Tom Cruise, returned their awards.
Following the scandal, the HFPA has pledged to take steps to promote inclusion within the organization.
