I have argued against “voting with dollars” because consumerism is undemocratic. Take an example of Wal-Mart: bragging about not shopping there seems conceited to me. It shows ignorance about how you get stuff with low money & transportation.
In spite of this, boycotts can be good! I think we should probably see the biggest participation in boycotts when the commodity in question is…not the most life essential, like maybe…in entertainment…
If you have a flame for HP despite everything, I’m sorry. I know love is irrational and franchises get fans through tough times. However awful it feels to change your HP spending habits, you will NOT die if you don’t get more official HP stuff. I promise you. It may not be as bad as you think, but honestly if you can’t distance yourself from HP AT ALL to help trans people…wtf is wrong with you?
If you want to, you can get over HP. Try to get obsessed with another thing! I know some stupid things are irreplaceable, but there’s fantasy out there which is objectively better in every measurable way. Take this chance to find something that is worthy of your attention, support, and fandom.
If you don’t want to get over HP, you can mitigate the economic points that are so often used as testimony in prosperity gospel (secular sect does it, too) Your hype adds up to points too. If you can’t eliminate, reduce. Cut back on your HP brand-related social signifying. Definitely take those fucking houses out of your bio!
Practice copyright infringement. :) Pirate the books, movies, or games. Write/draw politically revisionist fanfiction/fanart or critical analysis using HP as a bad role model. Have your crafty friend or etsy stranger make you a hufflepuff blorbomerch or whatever. Do not buy official products, do not see new movies in the theater, and no HP funko socks from Hot Topic! If you get compliments on any merch you have, get onto your soap box about trans rights and why JKR sucks, make sure they know, even if they do know, make new friends and strengthen bonds over a good outrage.
