One of the things you get good at as an aviator is keeping notes. At one point I actually designed a kneeboard card with parallel blocks. You never know when the powers that be are going to demand a minute by minute accounting of incidents and episodes.

Going through files I found this nugget of us leaving Washington in 2003. I don’t keep notes anymore. But up to a couple years ago when I was still flying I still did the “switch, heat, squawk, clock.” and write down the time before pushing the throttle forward. A little rudder and let’s go flying.

(Note We were moving from Oak Harbor WA to Lexington Park MD. Frankie was our 120# Rottweiler.) Grandpa was an Eagle that lived in Penn Cove park. He would sit on top of telephone/power poles. He was wider than the pole.)

Very interesting how you did it in down time too! During my stint of working in the airport this note-keeping tendency (or lack of it) really marked me out as being non-aviation background compared to my industry colleagues. There'd be an incident and I'd be like..."well, Al was just back from break so I'd say it would have been shortly after 1". Meanwhile ex-Navy and 25 years aviation industry Al whips out his little notebook with every possible required detail in recorded in there.

It is a little obsessive, but god help you if you can't answer what/when/who questions!

And I thought I was OCD for keeping up with sales tax on every purchase......... :)
