The Monkees concert was FANTASTIC! The amphitheater at the MN Zoo is a perfect concert venue. Small enough so that no matter where you're seated, it's a good seat and the sound carries perfectly in the evening air. I was lucky enough to get 7th and 8th row seats for Aaron, Jan, mum and me and there is something so magical about that jolt you get when you realize you're making eye contact with someone on stage. Happened once with Micky (and I got a smile too!) and another time with the backup band's lead guitarist.

They all sounded so good and strong! And seemed genuinely happy to be performing. I was positively thrilled by the number of Nez songs they performed. That man's voice puts me into a state of happiness like no other. Plus, he smiles periodically when he sings and you can hear it, which is adorable. Despite my strong love of Mr. Nesmith, at every Monkee's concert I attend, Peter wins my heart. He just seems like a really sweet man and like someone you'd want to have a beer with and exchange silly stories. I love the wonderful faces he makes and it's hard not to love a banjo player. Micky is such a ham and in the best possible of ways. He has the same mischievous smile he had on the show and it sounds like he's gained a lot of vocal skill over the years. Given the years they worked together without the other two, you can see the impact Davy's death has had on him most of all. They didn't address it like they did on the last tour, when his passing was so fresh. When he and Mike were walking back from the greenroom to the stage, towards the end of their onscreen Davy performance of Daddy's Song from Head, you could see that Micky was having a hard time with it and Mike gave him a gentle, one-armed hug before they made their way back up on the stage. It was a touching, semi-private moment to witness.

It was a great performance. I'm amazed by how may songs they managed to cram into their set list! Here it is for those who are interested:

Pleasant Valley Sunday

I was super excited that they did Tapioca Tundra. One of the more bizarre things that's come out of the mind of Michael Nesmith. We all had so much fun! It was such a great show full of fun music, great humor, and so much silliness :)
