Dear kairos,

(n.) The fleeting rightness of time and place that creates the opportune atmosphere for action, words, or movement.

Today I had a “life is good” moment. A rare experience for me, I am sure. When one spends so much time wallowing in self-hatred and sobbing at the thought of living even a moment longer, the ephemeral wink of genuine happiness consumes the being with content. That twinkle of the fleeting sense of loving life itself can bring a smile to one’s face for the first time in remembrance.

As for myself, that evanescent feeling came when being driven home from school by my brother. I turned up the volume on the radio, and my brother’s and my shared favourite radio station was playing a song we both knew by heart. A classic 1980’s song; I began singing along quietly as I often do when listening to this radio station. Surprisingly, this time, my brother joined. His deep voice and my high notes synchronized with the carefree melody in the car.

I turned to him in pleasant surprise as a blissful smile spread across my face. He looked at me with curiosity in his eyes as he questioned what caused the beam of light on my lips. I shrugged my shoulders and simply replied, “I’m happy.” He seemed to not quite understand the significance of my statement and turned back to the radio.

I drove home with serotonin warmly spreading throughout my body and a smile on my face.

Sincerely,
Tangerine Boy
