He talked to a Samaritan woman today!
I mean, a Samaritan woman...and not only that, one with a pretty bad rep. I keep asking this question, but who does that? What self respecting Jewish man would do that?
Here's how it happened. We were heading back to Galilee and had to pass through Samaria. We were tired and stopped by Jacob's well.
We went to buy food, but Jesus needed to rest. A woman came to the well to draw water.
Jesus asked her to get him a drink of water. She was astounded as I was, and said, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” Everyone knows Jews and Samaritans do not have anything to do with each other.
Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”
Of course the woman wanted to know more about this living water, and where she could get it.
Jesus told her to call her husband and come back.
She said she had no husband.
Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”
Th woman wondered how Jesus knew all about her. She thought he must be a prophet, and they talked about the messiah to come. Jesus told her he is the messiah!
We came back then, to see Jesus talking to the woman. She put down her pot and ran to the village to tell people about Jesus. She said, "Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did. He knew all about me, without me telling him anything. Can he be the messiah?"
And many people came to see him.
Wow. I'm beginning to think he really is the messiah, but he puzzles me. He is not what I expected, I mean, he talks to women, Samaritans, and lepers.
