The Verdict in Life After 60

History was made yesterday. Derek Chauvin was convicted of murder and manslaughter. Please do not read into this that I think Chauvin was not guilty, but I am trying to wrap my head around the fact he was convicted of three crimes!
Why was he not convicted on the greater charge of murder and it is left at that? Again, I am not saying he should have been convicted, but how can one commit murder and manslaughter in the same act?
It is sad when abusive force is used, but it is just as sad when an office loses his life. Granted, it is that split-second decision that can mean the difference between life and death. The problem I have is no one knows what went through Chauvin’s mind in that 9 minutes.
Did Floyd pose a threat to the officer’s life? Was Floyd under the influence of drugs. Did Floyd resist arrest? Was the whole event captured on video?
Whatever your thoughts and feelings two lives were changed forever. Mass shootings will continue, gun control isn’t always the answer, and there are good cops, bad cops, and racism, like it or not is still very much alive in the U.S.A.

What I have to say is from a Canadian perspective just so you know.
I think when he put his knee on his neck he probably figured it was the only way to keep him still. But there were other ways he could have like shackled his legs also. And when the cops partner said he shouldn't do that he never did listen and when Floyd said he couldn't breath right there it was attempted murder because he knew he was going to die. But I am glad he will be spending the rest of his life in jail and now maybe the rules for retraining people will change.

If you look back at the full video(not the edited). He said he couldn't breathe before Chavin even had him on the ground and the cops put Floyd on the ground because that's what he requested after refusing to get into the police vehicle.

I have only seen the edited one because that is what the news showed. And besides they didn't have to put him on the ground at all....

Edited

Thats really sad everyone gets the edited version. Nobody gets the whole story if it's the edited version because they specifically edit the video to work for their agenda, which is a race war. They should've probably just put him in the vehicle whether he liked it or not. Floyd requested to be put on the ground.

That doesn't mean Chauvin should be off the hook, but it's just little details that don't get shown or it would probably be a different verdict.

When he said he couldn't breathe and asked to be on the ground, they should have been EXTRA cautious with him, monitoring his breathing. There is zero justification whatsoever for putting his knee on his neck, casually, with his hands in his pockets (because there was no threat). The other officers present were telling him he should roll him onto his side as it became apparent he was seriously struggling. There was a blatant disregard for his condition, hence the conviction.

This was handled all wrong....I even know how to treat people with respect...I hope he gets what he deserves in jail....

Jodie CountingStars ⋅ April 21, 2021

I know I wouldn't have done that...even my head knows better but then they also have no heart.

And the whole truth should have been presented. I haven't seen the full video, not that it would have mattered unless I was one of the 12. I will agree that after a period of time he could have been restrained in a more safe manner. There were enough cops on scene. But everyone wants to play the race card.

To be clear - the entirety of the police officers' body cam footage was indeed shown in court during the trial. Which includes when he said he was claustrophobic and asked to be put on the ground instead of the squad car.

Jodie CountingStars ⋅ April 22, 2021

Yeah but still that was not a good place to be...

CountingStars Jodie ⋅ April 22, 2021

Oh, I agree. I was responding to the few comments saying "the whole truth" wasn't presented to the jury. It was.
