Bathroom issues in 2020

The other night Rob and I were watching TV and David wandered in to ask us why there was water dripping from the ceiling. Turns out Sophie was in the shower (upstairs) and the water was leaking from the kids’ bathroom. This happened once before, Rob figured he would just need to re-caulk the tub. That bathroom is original to the house, so we knew we’d have to remodel it eventually, but it wasn’t high on the list of projects.

Saturday I’m at work and he texts, “We’re going to have to remodel the kids’ bathroom now.” The leak was worse than anticipated, and re-caulking was not going to cut it. In fact, he moved one loose tile and was able to push through the subfloor. So, yeah…

He spent all day today doing the demo. He was worried that the water damage might affect the house structurally, but happily that does not appear to be the case. He did tear the room down to the studs, and the floor will have to be replaced. He’s toying with the idea of doing all the work himself but we’re going to get some estimates from contractors too. Everything has to be replaced - the vanity had water damage, the toilet in that bathroom was really old and awkward and we always knew that had to go, and he pulled the bathtub out too. I think we’re just going to put in a stand-up shower as the kids never use the tub anyway. The bathtub is still upstairs, it’s big and heavy and we will need some help getting it downstairs so it’s in our spare bedroom for now.

Fun times in home ownership! I was hoping to get a new furnace this year but thankfully we don’t actually need that yet, so this is where our home improvement money will go in the immediate future.

In other news: I got my new car, and I love it.

On the negative side you have to replace everything.

On the PLUS side you have a hubby who sounds like he knows what to do to fix it all.

You're lucky your hubby can do that type of work. Labor is freaking expensive.

Man it’s great to have a partner with some mad DIY skills! Renos suck but the end product is going to be just what you want.
