Meniere's Disease in Life

I went to the ENT earlier this week since the buzzing in my ear has gotten worse since July 2019. I meant to go back much earlier…then it was winter concert season…then COVID. I wasn’t going to anywhere nonessential last summer, so I finally found time to go.

Basically, she thinks I might have Meniere’s Disease. It’s a swelling of the inner ear that can cause ringing/buzzing, dizziness, and full feeling in the ear. It usually affects one ear and can cause hearing loss eventually. I have to go for an MRI soon to get a better look at whatever is going on in my head. Waiting on the MRI place to call me to set up an appointment.

So we’ll see. She said everything I’m telling her lines up with Meniere’s, but the data she is getting from the tests doesn’t quite match up. So that’s why she wants the MRI. Basically, she said I should try a low sodium, no caffine, and no alcohol diet. I don’t drink a lot of caffine (just my chai, and that isn’t much), I don’t really have alcohol ever (only occasionally with dinner or with Dann once in awhile), and I need to figure out how much salt I’m really eating. I don’t add extra salt to my food, but I do eat canned sauces and some frozen things.

It just stinks because there is no cure and I’ll have this buzzing in my ear for the rest of my life and possibly loose my hearing in one or both ears. It’s frustrating that, other than some life style changes, there’s really nothing I can do. There’s nothing any doctors can do either. Yes, it’s manageable, but it’s frustrating.

Maybe the MRI will tell the doctor’s something different. We’ll see.
