New plug in Life as we know it

The confrontation with Dour over pulling the plug on internet service went surprisingly well, in the sense of there being no blood or splintered furniture involved. Just some bitter argument and twisted logic.

Then Candi and I relieved stress in the bedroom, despite the late hour.

Dour headed a bit ago for the apartment clubhouse to use the wifi. Presumably he won't be able to do the heavy usage he sort of denies doing. He flatly denied the “illegal downloading” the tech guys say is the only explanation for using 456 gigs of data in less than a month. But he qualifies that downloading free copyrighted movies (with the most recent Batman as the example) from Pirate Bay or other bit-torrent types of sites is illegal. When specifically asked if his internet use could account for the bulk of the usage, he dodges into talking about “whoever downloaded that much didn't necessarily do anything illegal.” He says if there were an investigation, nothing illegal would be found on his computer.

Okay, maybe he shoots that stuff off to reside in the cloud. Or has a secret separate hard drive.

When he said it has to be someone hacking in, I pointed out he had redone our system so only our devices are recognized and let in. He might not want to admit incompetence, so dodged that.

He also argues maybe the Cox information is wrong and we haven't really be using that sort of volume. Cox should be investigated for defrauding us to try to get us to up the service level again.

Anyway, after dropping Candi off, I went to Verizon and bought a hotspot. It is going to be a lot slower and has a 4 gig limit monthly, so we can't stream movies like he had been, but we will be the only ones to have the password, and as soon as she gets her phone home I'll get it on and then hide the existence of this new wifi signal. The little box is squirreled away.

We'll just have to be careful about our screens showing we're using the intenet. Kind of like a kid hiding that sort of thing from a snoopy parent.

I've taken our desktop computers over to Candi's sister's place to get them out of retaliatory range, but it's a good place to leave them. We can use our laptops and just be more portable generally.

Of course, I have to really get used to using Open Office in a Word world. All my files are in Word.
