Yesterday the news of the death of rapper MF DOOM closed out an unbelievably awful year. I have personally never listened to much of his work (I really have to catch up on that), but I have listened to many rappers of the current generation talk about his work and it’s very interesting to hear how much the man was respected by other artists. He may have never reached absolute mainstream status, but it is incredible, and somewhat hilarious, how there are plenty of videos of (sometimes massively) successful rappers talking about their first approach to DOOM, or their favorite work of his, when the man is mostly unknown to the general public. It is somewhat reassuring that one’s work can still make an impact even if it doesn’t reach the popularity it might deserve in hindsight. Or at least that value is not exclusively bound to some monetary worth.
