Tom is almost 6. He loves his pets - especially our 5 month old pup we got shortly before quarantine.
I have to remind Tom that he can play with the puppy, but sometimes it needs to be left alone.
Tom loves his puppy and our other dog and cat. He’s always careful to be tender and has been caught hitting them once or twice, only to be reprimanded immediately.
Today I was replying to an email when I heard, ‘Okay, I have something for you. Hold still…’
Looking up I was expecting to see him giving him part of his snack. Instead I saw him trying to poke our pup in the eye with a long, thin plastic piece of a toy.
I grabbed his arm and told him how mean it was, and after his time-out I explained why we couldn’t do that. I told him it hurt my heart to see him do it. He told me that his heart told him to do it. The look on his face scared me.
Since then he has apologized several times over and seems to understand why he can’t be around the animals now.
It just scares me. You read that most serial killers start with animals, and the look on his face was chilling. Yet he can be one of the sweetest boys you’d meet.
For now I’m going to keep Tom and the animals separate and make him earn back the privilege of being with them. I will be keeping a close eye, though.
