Suggestion Box, Nearly April Edition in Suggestion Box

After browsing through my last suggestion box, here are the most popular requests, with the things that are done crossed off:

  • Comment deletion
  • User blocking
  • Pancake Tuesdays (optionally on Wednesdays)
  • Gin party Fridays

All right, so where are the party planners?

You guys are great. It feels like Prosebox has most of the must-have features, and it's on to more of the nice-to-have stuff now.

Starhawk March 26, 2014

I wouldn't mind the ability to follow someone on a per book level... I.e. if they post annoying crap in one book but you want to read their normal entries....

Flame is Love Starhawk ⋅ March 26, 2014

Agree

Deleted user Starhawk ⋅ March 26, 2014

Agreed.

Velveteen Starhawk ⋅ March 26, 2014

Ooh, I like that idea!

Meginsanity Starhawk ⋅ March 26, 2014

I like this one!

Mum of Yum Starhawk ⋅ March 26, 2014

I too would quite like this feature.

sassafras Starhawk ⋅ March 26, 2014

Agreed. I think many people think this is already how it works... and don't realize that we're actually reading all of their books.

banker chick Starhawk ⋅ March 26, 2014

This would make a perfect "nice to have" feature. Kinda like Pinterest meets Prosebox. lol

Don'tMakeMeThink Starhawk ⋅ March 26, 2014

I'm glad you said this, I'd been thinking that was how it already was but couldn't work out how to do it!

•kitkat• Starhawk ⋅ March 26, 2014

This is a wonderful idea.

Deleted user Starhawk ⋅ March 27, 2014

This was talked about last summer... I remember Simple Mind saying that because people have many books, it would be cumbersome to bookmark books directly. Instead, you'd bookmark a user, and then have the option to exclude some of their books from your bookmarks list afterwards. That's exactly what you want.

Starhawk Deleted user ⋅ March 27, 2014

Yes indeed, that is exactly what I want. It would also save the incredible hassle of following a user and not being included when they create a new book. Instead it would be followed by default and you could exclude it later.

Ophidia Starhawk ⋅ March 27, 2014

Yes yes yes. I don't need my bookmarks getting clogged with entry after entry of music videos someone likes from their "omg deez videoz ROOOOL" book.

Deleted user Starhawk ⋅ March 31, 2014

AGREED!

offmychest March 26, 2014

edit notes?

Deleted user offmychest ⋅ March 26, 2014

I'd lie to edit other people's notes to ake thm more interesting and cause general mayhem lol.

Just kidding. Maybe we need some mad libs?

Deleted user offmychest ⋅ March 26, 2014

Yes, I think editing notes would be nice, especially for those of us who have phones whose keyboards are a little nuts.

I definitely can't wait for back dating!

Nin Cat Mommy ⋅ March 26, 2014

I totally second back dating!! I would even be tempted to host MoonPie Monday for some back dating.

Deleted user March 26, 2014

I'd like to be able to see who is following me, not just who has friended me.

A nice paid feature might be to get notifications about who has added/deleted you.

Oracle Deleted user ⋅ March 26, 2014

I disagree. shrug

Deleted user Oracle ⋅ March 26, 2014

Which did you not agree with?

Deleted user Deleted user ⋅ March 26, 2014

This was kicked around a bit in the early days of Prosebox; almost everyone wanted Follows to be completely private.

Deleted user Deleted user ⋅ March 26, 2014

But why? I think it's a security thing, for me anyway. I want to know who is following me so I can block if I'd like to, I don't think I should be forced to go friends only for that.

Deleted user Deleted user ⋅ March 26, 2014

Agree especially for those of us who are willing to pay for that feature.

I just discovered by chance if you wanna know who has blocked you. For eg, if you read someone's entry, stated there 4 comments, but you only see 3 notes, then that 4th noter is either someone you have blocked/someone who has blocked you.

you just get someone else to 'peep' in that entry to know who that 4th noter is, since blocking 'blinds' both parties.

Deleted user Deleted user ⋅ March 27, 2014

Being able to see who's bookmarked you won't help with that, really. They can just type your username in the search box and read you that way.

Deleted user Deleted user ⋅ March 27, 2014

Oh, and the note above me pretty effectively explains why. Unfollowing would generate drama, just as unfriending generates drama on Facebook. Some people will go to great lengths to pursue that drama, too.

Deleted user Deleted user ⋅ March 26, 2014

Another issue s sock puppet accounts. You block someone and all they have to do is make a sock puppet account to get around the block.

Deleted user Deleted user ⋅ March 26, 2014

Yes, it's just that easy.

Deleted user Deleted user ⋅ March 27, 2014

If someone's creating sock puppet accounts to troll or stalk you, report them. Simple Mind can block them by IP.

A visible bookmarks list will do nothing to help that, I'm afraid.

Deleted user Deleted user ⋅ March 31, 2014

This would make it more like Facebook, and it's not about Facebooking. It's journalling, writing, expressing. IMO

Deleted user March 26, 2014

How about a way to distinguish between male and female diarists? Sometimes, it's hard to tell who is and isn't.

kashka March 26, 2014

I'd really REALLY like to be able to export, even if it's just to a simple text file. Not being able to have a back up makes me twitchy.

Oracle kashka ⋅ March 26, 2014

Oracle March 26, 2014

Anit March 26, 2014

The ability to reply to a note from the Comments section rather than having to go back to the entry, find the comment, and click reply would be wonderful.

CeruleanButterfly March 26, 2014

I miss the Diary Circles, it was easy to create community with people based on topics of interest.

Deleted user March 26, 2014

Comment deletion feature is awesome.

however, can we have it like this instead, ie if I want to delete my comments in others' entries, I can only delete my comments but others' comments in that thread will remain undeleted (unless those noters delete them later).

Or alternatively, set a time limit, for eg after a few hours none of the comments can be deleted except by the entries' owners.

At least we can have control on keeping notes which others leave in our books. The thought of noters returning back to delete their notes which ultimately erase out others' notes in the threads (including entries' owners' comments in thosr threads).....I find that worrying.

Deleted user March 26, 2014

The thing where you can add basic stats (age/sex/location) to find other similar users (or get a ballpark idea of where this person is coming from, life experience wise).

Jigger March 26, 2014

Wow, that's a lotta suggestions. I would like it if we got notified if one reader commented on another reader's note--right now, I only see notifications if someone comments on an entry I wrote or a note I left--not if they comment on another reader's note on my entry. Does that make sense?

Otherwise, it's just grand.

Deleted user Jigger ⋅ March 31, 2014

I wouldn't care for that option because I don't care for it in Facebook. IMO if someone is having a conversation with someone else, I can't be bothered to be bothered with it.

aceytray March 26, 2014

Can we get a calender view and/ or ability to download our books? I found back on OD that without those two it became very had to track my writing.

Thanks.

Deleted user Notkieran ⋅ March 27, 2014

I'd still like a search feature. :)

Deleted user Deleted user ⋅ March 31, 2014

Agreed - When I know I've written about a certain topic and need to review it, but can't remember when I wrote it, I can then easily search the word or topic.

Deleted user March 27, 2014

Please don't change the way note deletion works. As it is, you can delete your own comments, and you can delete comments on any content you post (either comments or entries).

That's fair, and appropriate.

Agreed.

Deleted user March 27, 2014

Good stuff. I like the comment deletion. That obviates need for comment editing/preview in a simple way. I'm thinking that maybe, though, if I leave a comment and the recipient deletes it, I'd still want record of it in my "Comments Sent."

What about some kind if hit counter for entries, based either on total raw hits or distinct users? I sometimes like to know, if an entry that I have written doesn't get many comments, is it because no one read it or because they just had nothing to say about it?

About the only other thing I can think of is ability to save a book to a file as text or html.

Deleted user Deleted user ⋅ March 27, 2014

Who would delete one of your comments anyway, Dave?

If I feel a comment is worth saving for posterity, I'll write a "scratch pad" entry about it. Otherwise, a comment is just that: a comment on content someone else has written, and the recipient has the ability (and the right) to do with it whatever they like.

A hit counter is a nice idea.

And yes, backup for books is essential.

Deleted user Deleted user ⋅ March 31, 2014

This would be a great idea for those who are actively wanting to get their creative writing out there. Not so much for journalling. Maybe the system could automate a diary book, and a creative writing book, where new users get to click on which one they wish to add to their box? Both of these would have different features to suit the different goals? (Might be a bit too grand - but just thought I'd throw that out there)

Lindsey March 27, 2014

I was wondering if you're thinking about taking the site fully mobile? I can't find a way to post pics from my camera roll to Prosebox. I think a fully mobile integrated site would be awesome. Mostly because I want to add pictures from my iPhone.

Deleted user Lindsey ⋅ March 28, 2014

Hi, I added a page to the Prosebox FAQ for you:

http://prosebox.wikispaces.com/How+do+I+post+pictures+from+my+iPhone%27s+camera+roll+to+Prosebox%3F

Do me a favor and try it, ok? Let me know if you have any trouble.

Mermy Cullen March 29, 2014

so is there an editor setting on here for entries? Like on OD we could put codes in there that would just show up every time you wrote an entry so you didnot have to always load them.. like if I always wanted the this code to show up in my text every time I wrote? <img src=" Pic here" class="center-block"/> is there a way to do that?

Miapaws March 29, 2014

How about being able to upload images directly from your computer?

Deleted user Miapaws ⋅ March 29, 2014

He'll need to host images on Prosebox or a related server, which would require storage (say 5000 users x 2 Gb of space per user = 10 Tb) and bandwidth. Plus he'd need to write a UI so you could manage your uploaded images.

EvequeFou Deleted user ⋅ April 02, 2014

...which is why OD had this as a paid feature.

Blue Echo March 29, 2014

In many ways I've liked ProseBox BETTER than OD, but I kind of miss the "circles" feature. It was kind of nice to have a separate place where people with special interests could go to find and share entries about a common topic. I found a lot of my friends/bookmarks that way!

ladylovestheocean March 30, 2014

If this has been suggested before ignore me but. I would like to have better profiles available so we can search maybe by age, location, sex, etc. I would like to find more people to read.

gravity March 30, 2014

Ability to mark a bookmarked entry as unread so you can remember to go back to it easily?

Deleted user gravity ⋅ March 31, 2014

Noodlebugs! April 02, 2014

I would love to have the ability to page break with a visible line. Is that already there somewhere and I've missed it? If not, Is there a code that I can use? Thanks

EvequeFou Noodlebugs! ⋅ April 02, 2014

If you mean what I think you mean, just putting a long row of ------------- on a line by itself in your text works, or an <hr/> tag.

EvequeFou April 02, 2014

The new editor seems to have some quirky behavior for me (as usual, IE11/Win8.1). I think what you're trying to do is not have a scrollbar in the edit box, it just grows in size as you type and rely on the page's scrollbar in the browser. The problem is that the size of the edit box doesn't seem to grow quite as fast as the content, so I have some content I can reach by scrolling the cursor but there aren't any scrollbars. The total lack of border around my typing area is also irksome.

Fix, pretty please? :-)

simple mind EvequeFou ⋅ April 02, 2014

There's an editor setting now to resolve your total lack of border issue (look under Settings, there's an editor section). Maybe I'll create some kind of static fallback that doesn't resize, since not every browser plays nicely.

Ophidia April 05, 2014

I'm not sure if this has been brought up before (apologies if it has!) but what's the general consensus on needing to use < br > for line breaks? I personally find it a drag, especially if I'm writing a long list. I'd love to not have to write or copy/paste < br > over and over. Maybe I'm the only one who feels that way? Not a huge deal, but figured I'd mention it as a nice-to-have suggestion. P.S. Congrats on 5000 users!! Woooo!!

Deleted user Ophidia ⋅ April 05, 2014

You can leave two or more spaces on the end of a line and hit ENTER, and it'll put in a linebreak the same as <br>.

Ophidia Deleted user ⋅ April 05, 2014

long gasp of sudden new knowledge THAT IS AWESOME THANK YOU!

simple mind Ophidia ⋅ April 05, 2014

What G said. :-)

Nova April 06, 2014

I have a suggestion/request. I don't know if this would even be possible, but I've found myself moving entries into another (private) box after a week or so. Unless there's an easier way to do this, I've been having to edit each individual entry to change which box I want it in. It's not a huge issue right now, but if I want to continue doing this, I'm going to have to do it at least once a week, to avoid editing a shit ton of entries at once. So, would it be possible to move entries into other boxes without individually editing them?

Also, when I hide the "current news", is there any way to "unhide" it? I had to search for your account to post this, since I couldn't figure out how to unhide the news.

aglow April 08, 2014

I'd love a feature similar to the "jump to newest entry" button that was under notes on OD!

Swimming With Killer Whales April 08, 2014

I am real disappointed and frustrated with the default entry order. I write an entry it goes to the top of the heap like that's my first chapter.. I have 3 entries or chapters and my introduction is at the bottom of the heap and my 2nd chapter is at the top. So someone comes a long and clicks on what they think is the first chapter and they are confused. I think entries should be at the bottom of the list by default. I also suggest that the entries, or chapters if you will should be able to be rearranged after the fact.

Evil Lapplander April 09, 2014

Three things.

1) When you hit enter you dont get a line break. That is bad. 2) You should have some kind of counter so you see how many who reads a specific entry. 3) You should be notified if anyone following your diary.

SociallyInept April 14, 2014

I wouldn't mind seeing a button to lazily center something.

Cats Rule from OD April 19, 2014

I really would like a download feature. a simple text file would be ok. But I don't like that there is no way at this point to download the entries. I have to write them in a program like notepad to add onto my previous entries to keep them all together. Then copy and paste and then work on certain formatting that I would like for this entry. Double work. If you could do this, I would certainly write more, but at this time, I hate the thought of possibly losing everything I am writing. Thank you.

woman in the moon April 19, 2014

How do we all feel about bookmarks disappearing after they've been read? Sometimes I like to go back to them and I'm having a heck of a time finding them anymore.

Nash April 19, 2014

I am sure someone has mentioned this before, but will there be a "download your diary" feature in the offing?

Swimming With Killer Whales April 21, 2014

Editing SNAFU

I am having problems with the order of my entry chapters.

Notice on the right hand side a box titled "3 published entries" underneath the title are a list of 3 entries. The last entry in the list is "My complaint is lengthy" I want that entry to be the first entry in the list, but I don't know how to rearrange the order or if it is even possible.

The first entry in the list "Attorney misconduct bureaucracy." I want to be the last entry or currently the 3rd entry in the list. But I don't know how to do that.

When I start writing a story and enter chapters as I write them, the first chapter and subsequent chapters are continually pushed down to the bottom as I add each chapter. Hypothetically, I finish the book and I have a list of chapters and someone comes along and reads my book. The person quite naturally starts reading the very first entry. The very first entry at the top of the list, is the very last chapter of my book. So that someone reading the top entry is reading the ending rather than the beginning.

The default always puts latest entries to the top of the heap, including the final chapter, or last entry of the book being at the top, or first entry. I write my books chronologically forward. If I wrote my chapters starting with the ending and go from there, this would not be a problem. I don't know anyone who writes backwards chronologically.

Last thing, Is it possible that I can rearrange the entries to whatever. That would solve my problem too. Look at my entry list on the right of my screen. How can I manipulate the entries in the order I want them to be in? If this can't be done it can't be done.

I hope you understand. I have been trying to figure this out before make anymore entries. Thank you so much for your concerns. I really, really appreciate it.

simple mind Swimming With Killer Whales ⋅ April 21, 2014

I can understand what you are saying from a book writing perspective. The majority of the users use it for Journaling and come from Open Diary, where the order was always reverse chronological. I may look at adding a book option at some point so you can change to chronological order but right now it's not supported.

Swimming With Killer Whales simple mind ⋅ April 21, 2014

I am one of those lost child's of Open Diary that you speak of. When I was on the "Open Diary" site, I treated and made entries that were quite naturally diary entries and the chronological order of my entries were such of a diary, hence the name "Open Diary." I was completely satisfied with the site and I was site when they ended their long run. So I stumbled on over here to Prosebox by word of mouth, and they had a claim to fame of writing books and posting then on the site, well at least they seemingly said they did. I thought how kewl is that. One of the options of the site is "Create new prose book." I'm like how kewl. They describe this apparent option as a "Prose book" option. They describe this option as follows "A prose book is like a blog, diary, or journal. You can create more than one to organize your entries." I am like wait a minute here, it was said "Create new prose book," not "Create new blog, diary, or journal." So this dubious book is really a "blog, diary, or journal" and not a book at all. Why don't they call it "Create new Prose blog, diary, or journal." If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, smells like a duck, poops like a duck, its a duck. Suppose I am interested in playing volleyball at some volleyball club. I go to the meeting place to play volleyball and find out they don't play volleyball at all, they play basketball. Can you imagine the mass confusion in the world if the world behaved and acted like Prosebox? So why is Prosebox pulling the whole bait and switch needlessly? You do a search on the Internet and it comes up that you can create book entries on this site. The very last description of "Create new prose book," is this "NOTE: This is not a book entry. The description below should be a general description of the types of entries you will write in this book (and is optional)." They contradict them selves " this is not a BOOK..." ..."general description of the types of entries you will write in this BOOK..." Quack! Quack! Quack!

Does anyone know of a free or almost free site where you can actually write book entries online and they actually quack like a duck?

Deleted user Swimming With Killer Whales ⋅ April 21, 2014

Try wikispaces.com. What you want is a wiki.

But you can make Prosebox work that way with backdating: http://prosebox.wikispaces.com/How+can+I+change+the+order+of+entries+listed+in+a+book%3F

Swimming With Killer Whales April 21, 2014

"G" the back dating trick worked; however it is a very convoluted way of doing business I should say. Thanks for the tip my friend, I appreciate it. As for Wikispace, I need to research the matter. I may end up over there at some point; although, as a journaling site, NOT A BOOK CREATING SITE, Prosebox is friendly. It is beyond me why they refer to "create a book" all the time.

Swimming With Killer Whales April 22, 2014

"G" one last question. When I back date the entry or sometimes called "chapter," let say 3 weeks back, will the posting go through just posted. That is will the back dated entry be seen by people as a current entry to make comments on?

Deleted user Swimming With Killer Whales ⋅ April 22, 2014

It will be as if you posted it on the date that you've set. Readers won't see it as a new entry because the date isn't current.

You could post it under the current date, wait a few days for comments, and then backdate it.

Kate April 26, 2014

I realize this may have already been suggested, but is there a plan for downloading our Boxes? Perhaps a premium feature?

Also, it would be helpful if the title-entry box would default to today's date if it is not populated by the user. I see a lot of people complaining about it (I don't get the issue, but peh.)

Staying here, FWIW. I see nothing that appeals to me over there. If this place folds, I'll consider it a sign that 15+ years of semi-public journaling was enough.

FreshJerseyPeach April 29, 2014

How about a paid version (yearly? monthly?) to have a book w/out ads?

woman in the moon May 04, 2014

Just a note to thank you for the options on Bookmarks to show Unread/Recent/All. Or whatever they are. I like them. I like to go back to ones I've read and leave notes later or see what other notes are there. Thanks again.

banker chick May 07, 2014

I was wondering if there will be an option in future to mark unread bookmarks as "read". I'm starting to get behind on reading entries and it gets overwhelming watching them pile up on my bookmarks list. Maybe I have too many bookmarks. lol

Princess Buttercup May 13, 2014

Am I missing the May Suggestion Box? Oh well, I will put it here anyway. So, I noticed the other day that on the comment page (where I read my notes instead of on each individual entry) I noticed that I don't see replies to those notes I doubt it would happen very often, or maybe it does and I just don't see it, but there could be a conversation (or a fight, who knows!) and I would never know it unless I go to the actual entry. Not sure if anyone else is interested in seeing ALL comments, including replies, on the Comments page, but it sure would be nice from my point of view :)

beth May 20, 2014

I would love to be able to mark entries on my bookmark page as "read" even if I haven't, to clear out the entries I'm not interested in reading without having to click through to them.

World Pilot May 21, 2014

When I build a link, in Open Diary I generally had an external link open a new tab/window (a href="URL here" target="new" > description of URL < /a) [ of course, the parentheses would be replaced by ' < ' and ' > ' ] . However, if the link went somewhere else in my own diary, I usually did not have it open a new tab/window, simply by skipping the 'target="new"' term.

How do I disable the 'target="new"' function here that seems to be automatically included whenever the system detects a link that I've written?

Good work overall. Thank you.

Pretend Mulling May 22, 2014

I think this has been brought up before, but could we have private entries? I don't know about anyone else, but sometimes I just like to write things out and look over them myself, without anyone else's input.

simple mind Pretend Mulling ⋅ May 22, 2014

Private is an available setting at the book level. So currently you can create a private book and put private entries there. And you can always go back later and change what book and entry is in if you want to share with friends or whatever.

At some point I'll add the ability to change privacy of entries within a book.

Notkieran Pretend Mulling ⋅ May 26, 2014

Random punter: Have you considered saving in "Draft" mode, for the time being?

Karu May 23, 2014

is there a way to export your books, or even a printable version of entries? I used to print off a lot of my entries on Open Dairy before they went under, just so I always had a hard copy of my entries. Just wondering. Maybe there already is and I just haven't quite figured it out yet.

Katren...In Conclusion May 28, 2014

Have I missed the way to get enntries out of my bookmarks when I don't ever want to see them again?

simple mind Katren...In Conclusion ⋅ May 28, 2014

If you use the Unread tab they drop off after being read, though I'm also looking at ways to improve that.

Katren...In Conclusion May 28, 2014

I think I phrased the above question badly. Trying again: Have I missed tye way to get entries out of my bookmarks if I do not whih to read that particular entry at all.? And, thank you for your very prompt reply.I'm still not used to someone actually being there,

simple mind Katren...In Conclusion ⋅ May 28, 2014

No, there is currently not a way. However, in reference to my improvements mentioned in my previous reply, I am looking at adding a button you can click directly from the Bookmarks Unread list and marking them as Read without needing to load the entry page.

The Wandering Gamer June 06, 2014

Not sure if it's been suggested, but I was thinking an optional view counter might be cool. Sometimes I'm just curious to know if people have read an entry, but without comments, there isn't a way to tell.

Is there a list of current users somewhere? I'd like to see that.

Just in case you hadn't found it yet

So, you know there's unread, latest and all bookmark tabs? Well how about a "favourites" tab where we can, say "star", our favourite books and have them come up as unread in the favourites tab. That would be cool.

I know I'm really late, but.....

What about a preview button for changing your icon picture?

I think the default should be "all" when clicking the bookmarks link. Currently the default seems to be just to display the unread ones. The problem is, if you don't leave a comment the first time you see an entry, it doesn't show up next time you click bookmarks and you forget it.

Not sure if it's already possible or not, but I'd like the ability to mark an entry "unread". Often times, I read an entry but want to come back to it later to finish reading it or to note on it and I don't want to have to dig through the "all" bookmarks to find it.

just a thought. thanks.
