I’ve never been particularly superstitious, and I like Fridays too much to be upset by one just because it’s the 13th day of the month.
On the coronavirus front, our school system announced yesterday they were closing for the next couple weeks. That’s expanded statewide by this point, and my employer finally said that those of us affected by school closures can work from home throughout that time. Small mercies, and I wish more people had that option without totally shutting down the country.
I originally was going to be off at an event this weekend, but have decided to nix it. I’m still not over a cold I got a couple weeks back, and I don’t really want to be in close contact with a bunch of people from other parts of the country. As I mentioned a couple posts ago, I’m learning more and more to embrace my own inclinations, and “not leaving the house” is definitely one of them. Lots of video games and podcasts, plus books!
I have a love for books and the written/printed word, both as a source of information and stories and as a visual thing. I enjoy having books in my house even if I haven’t read them yet, as they feel like a source of possibility. Typography and book design are also things I really enjoy. A long-term goal is to start doing illustrated versions of existing books once I can become a halfway decent artist. For that, I have to figure out how to practice without driving myself up wall, but that’s for another time.
In the meantime I’m going to be content to screwing around with LaTeX. I find that I read more challenging stuff better in paper form than electronically, or at least on a computer screen (and I think I saw some research saying that we process information differently from medium to medium?). So it’s been fun to start putting together some things to read for myself. I’m also a big language person, so I’ve got a couple translations coming down the pipe eventually as well. The key is to stop worrying about what the “purpose” is beyond “I want to and it’s fun.” Social responsibility is all well and good, but we’re not all called to be Gandhi.
