Currently reading On Rereading by Patricia Meyer Spacks. While I wasn’t expecting a lot of mind-blowing realizations from this book, she’s surprised me with her analysis of Jane Austen’s works which I never thought of before. Austen is of course one of my favorite writers but I never seriously thought about why her works as a whole acts as a safety blanket in times of personal turmoil....Spacks pointed out that Jane Austen represents civilization, and there’s a code of conduct by which her protagonists live their lives which imply a standard of human decency to which we all aspire.
