Book Description

Your healthcare provider may treat conditions of the spine, shoulder, or pelvis. Several healthcare providers from different specialties may be involved your care. This is important in managing the symptoms of a condition, especially because some symptoms are chronic or may change in severity over time. Some of the more common medical professionals involved in the treatment of spine, shoulder, and pelvis conditions may include the following:

Primary care healthcare provider
A primary healthcare provider is a person who has received specialized education and training in either family practice or general internal medicine. The following is provided by primary healthcare providers

Routine healthcare (including annual physical exams and immunizations), health promotion, and disease prevention
Medical treatment for acute conditions
For conditions that could become more severe or chronic, seek medical attention immediately.

Your primary care provider may diagnose the disease and may refer you to specialists for specific aspects.

Neurologist
Neurology is a branch of medicine that treats disorders of the nervous systems, such as the brain and spinal cord. The healthcare provider who specializes in neurology is called a neurologist. After completing medical school, healthcare providers specializing in adult neurology complete one year of residency in internal medicine and at least three years of neurology residency. Neurosurgeon
Neurological surgery is the branch of medicine that provides both operative and nonoperative management of disorders that affect the central and peripheral nervous systems, including their supportive structures and vascular supply, and the operative and nonoperative management of pain. Neurological surgery covers disorders of brain, blood supply, meninges and skull. A neurosurgeon is a surgeon who specializes exclusively in neurological surgery. Also, neurosurgeons can perform spine surgery for conditions like spinal stenosis or herniated disks.

Orthopedic surgeon
The healthcare provider who specializes in bone and joint injuries and disorders is called an orthopedic surgeon, or an orthopedist. Orthopedists focus on the musculoskeletal and nervous system. This includes diagnosing, treating, and providing rehabilitation to affected areas and functions. It also advises on how to minimize more damage.

Rheumatologist
Rheumatologists are health and fitness care professionals who specialize in treating arthritis and other rheumatic conditions that can affect the joints, muscles, bone, skin, and other tissues. Most rheumatologists are either trained in rheumatology or have an internal medicine background. They are specially trained to identify many types of rheumatic diseases in their earliest stages. These include arthritis, many autoimmune diseases, musculoskeletal disorders, and osteoporosis.

Anesthesiologist
Anesthesiology refers to the medical specialty that provides medicines to manage pain and support life functions prior, during and after surgery. Anesthesiologists refer to a healthcare provider who is trained in anesthesiology.

An anesthesiologist completed four years in post-medical school training as an anesthesiologist. This is in addition of the four years of medical school. Anesthesiologists usually further specialize in certain surgery specialties, such as neurosurgical anesthesia.
