Solving the Rubik’s cube has been on the top of my bucket list for as long as I remember. I was always surprised to witness people solve the puzzle with such speed and concentration. After many hours of training and a few days of quarantine, I could cross it off my bucketlist. I’ve come to understand that solving the cube isn’t just a fun pastime but an effective method of increasing your concentration, focus, perseverance, memory, ability to think critically, and mindfulness.

Focus & Concentration

It takes a lot of concentration to solve the cube. Your brain will be able to focus on one task and increase the concentration. Keeping your brain active and focused allows you to process information more quickly. Concentration can improve your ability to read complex material as well as other areas. Perseverance

It requires a lot of perseverance to solve the cube. It can take hours to solve it, and you could need to restart the process repeatedly, bending until your fingers are hurting. Of course solving the cube will bring a feeling of satisfaction and fulfillment. Cubers are able to tackle difficult or time-consuming tasks in the future and are confident in their ability to complete them.

Memory

Your memory and muscle memory will improve by working out the fidget gadget. First, you’ll be memorizing algorithms that translate to various actions of the cube. Next, you’ll translate the algorithms to your hands and strengthen your hands using repetitions, thereby developing the muscle memory. With enough repetition, you’ll forget the letters of the algorithm and rely entirely on muscle memory. Ta-da muscle memory!

After you have memorized many algorithms and you are able to apply them all using your hands, your hand-eye coordination will significantly improve. The cube naturally develops sharp reflexes and incredible hand-eye coordination. Mindfulness is the act of bringing all your attention to the present. While you’re working on the cube, you’re forced to focus on the present and on the sequence of algorithms that your fingers are continuously performing. Since you’re losing track of the algorithms, your mind can’t wander while you solve the cube. This is why the cube acts as a securing device that assists us stay in the present. It will be apparent that you’ve successfully focused your attention on one thing when you finish the cube. It’s difficult to achieve this level of focus and concentration, but the cube can make it seem effortless.
