Book Description

Air temperature is the most widely measured amount within the atmosphere according to the National Weather Service. Temperature is an important element in the way people organize their lives, from picking the clothes they wear to planning their day. Since temperature is so crucial it’s important to know how to accurately measure it. I think you would be surprised at how many people, including professional meteorologists do not follow the general guidelines laid out by the National Weather Service. Look at here to get a knockout post on temperature.

These guidelines are applicable to all types of thermometers that include classic and digital mercury thermometers.

Set the thermometer at 5 feet higher than the ground (+/- 1 foot.). If the thermometer is placed too low, it can cause the ground to be heated, while a thermometer placed too high can result in it cooling down too much due to natural cooling. 5 feet is the best distance.

The thermometer should be located in shade. If you place your thermometer in direct sunshine, direct radiation from the sun is going cause a temperature greater than what it is supposed to be.

The thermometer you choose to use should have adequate airflow. This lets air circulate around the thermometer and maintains a balance with its surroundings. It is therefore important to make sure there are no obstructions blocking your thermometer such as trees or buildings. The more free the space, the better.

Set the thermometer on an area of grass or dirt. Pavements and concrete absorb more heat than grass. This is the reason why cities are much more comfortable than suburbs. It is advised to keep the thermometer within 100 feet. from any concrete or paved surfaces to prevent a falsely high temperature measurement.

Protect the thermometer. If you experience precipitation, you do not want your thermometer to get wet as that could permanently cause damage to it. The Stevenson screen provides both airflow and cover which makes it an ideal place for thermometers and other instruments. If you can’t get one, a standard solar radiation shield will suffice.

Electronic devices function at 30-40°C. While server brochures and data sheets might claim that devices can be operated up to this temperature without derating, the truth is that electronics can be destroyed by temperatures.

Cooling fans that operate at the top of their operating temperature must be run faster to lift the air volume above the CPU as well as other electronic devices. They are mechanical devices that have bearings that will wear down and need replacement. Electronics component life will also decline at higher temperatures.

It’s that simple. Now you are temperature measurement experts. Let’s get out there to take measurements!
