I have had a life long interest in radio. As a young boy (under age 6) I have a memory of going to my bed at night with a transistor radio by my pillow. It was a little radio similar to this one:
It was AM only and had two dials - ON/OFF Volume and TUNING.
I have a vivid memory of the first song I can remember hearing on it.
Growing up I always had a radio near. We spent a little time out of the country and I remember listening to broadcasts in English on a shortwave radio. I still have a love of shortwave today.
As a teenager I remember the advent of FM and the so-called underground rock stations. These became the staple of my listening along with my own music collection. I was always rigging up antennas to get the far away stations.
Jump to present day. I have 3 radios capable of receiving AM/FM/Shortwave. A desktop scanner for Police/Fire/Aircraft and a 2 meter handheld ham radio.
Now I’m looking at buying one of these:
It doesn’t look like a radio but it’s a wide range receiver capable of receiving almost everything. It hooks up to your computer via USB and uses software like this:
Connect a decent antenna to it and the you can get all the other radios I own do put together and then some.
There’s a lot more I could say, but if you’re interested just Google Software Defined Radio (SDR).
