The Late Worm

As the light draws thin and the first stars shine
The evening sparrow seeks to dine
Flitting along from stalk to rock
It stalks its prey as the hungry hawk
Grass seed here, beetle there
Fiercely scrabbling for sustenance rare

When up from the earth arises a beast
Trailing slime on its path, each segment creased
Creeps through the sawblade, probing, testing
The scrabbling, fluttering prey it is besting
Opening wide, it launches ahead
Feathers go flying, feet follow the head
