Old-Fashioned Oatmeal Cookies. in And So It Goes....

1 cup raisins
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups quick-cooking rolled oats
1 cup chopped nuts

Cover raisins with hot water. Simmer 10 minutes. Drain. Reserve 1/3 cup raisin liquid. Sift flour with soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Gradually add sugar to shortening in mixing bowl.; cream until light and fluffy. Blend in egg and vanilla extract, beat well. Stir in raisins and reserved raisin liquid. Add sifted dry ingredients, rolled oats and nuts.; mix thoroughly. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake at 375 degrees F. for 10 to 12 minutes, until golden.
