author: Doris Betts

This author, who's written various books, usually writes about the Deep South. So her books are colored with attitudes, thoughts and beliefs of the people from that region of the country.

In this book, the central character is a 12 year old child, who is dying of kidney failure. Her family deals with it in various ways. You get to meet her father, a police officer who is raising her himself after her mother took off. There are his parents, his in-laws, his love interests and the erstwhile mother.

Of course, the church also has a huge influence on the characters - whether Catholic or Baptist or those who've put its influence behind them.

As a story it's hard to read, as a book it reads easily.
