Anyone know anything about smokers? in 2020

I want to buy Andy a smoker for Christmas.
I know NOTHING. His friend has one that he recommended so I at least have an option but I figured I’d try my luck here to see if anyone has any recommendations.
I know some can be very expensive but this would be his first one. He’s a rookie. He’s never really smoked anything so I’m not going to spend $1,000+ on this. My budget is around $400.

Ha. I read your title on the front page and the first thought in my head was, "My dad is a smoker. So I know a little bit."
But then I read the blurb LOL
I'm trying to convince my husband that we need a smoker. And a new grill in general. I'd like to try my hand at barbeque.

I know nothing about them but my dad and brother have a Traeger and they swear by them.

we have a Masterbuilt John McLemore Signature Series 536.3-sq in Black Electric Smoker. Its a beginners smoker, easy to use, compact and it smokes nicely. We want a Traeger eventually but decided to go with this one to start it was 200-250 i believe at lowes

Traeger has the best smokes IMO by far!

My husband has had this one for a few years. No complaints’, we have always been happy with the results!

Depends. Looking for convenience and ease of use! Get an electric smoker or a pellet grill. Looking for authenticity? Get an offset smoker. Looking for versatility? Get a Kamado grill. I think something like the Weber Smoky Mountain is a good balance, and is around your price point.
I’ve tried them all, and I just rig my gas grill to smoke whenever I make BBQ.
