Bear mentioned to me, on the phone this evening, that this afternoon he had a bout of depressive symptoms. I told him that my normal reaction to getting up in the morning is, “What is the point”? What is the point to my existence. We both agreed that the reason is that we must try to lead good lives while in this life, so that we may hopefully enter the gates of Heaven. He does not think that it is good for him to stay in a wheelchair all day. I agreed. I asked him if they give him ROM (range of motion) exercises. He said that they do not. Muscles can tighten to the point in which there forms a contracture. I have seen this first hand when I held my practice. Muscles can atrophy. It is not a good condition to have. I suggested that he mention to his primary care physician or the house physician his desire to receive some gentle physical therapy such as that which I mentioned.
This evening, as I was nuking a baking potato, there was a knock on my door. It was my neighbor to the right of me. She thought that her cat had run away. Her friend found the cat in the apartment. She was visibly shaken. She has gone through so much. I mentioned her in a previous entry. I put a note under her door after that asking her to take care of herself, to get well and to make her cats and herself her #1 priority. I told her that when she is 100% well, we will make another shopping trip to the thrift store. She smiled. I stayed a while and we talked, discussed all that we have to be thankful for, I gave her a hug then left. Life has so many twists and turns. More later.
