I’ve been watching longplays of my favorite Nintendo games for at least two weeks.

Fun Fact: This game is the actual sequel to Super Mario Bros. But, as you might see from this video, Lost Levels is HAAAAARRRRRRRRDDDD. As in, the president of Nintendo North America called it a “punishment to play” in 1986 and refused to release it to the US and Canadian markets. This is how we ended up with the Super Mario Bros 2 most Americans and Canadians are familiar with, which is actually a modded version of a Japanese game called Doki Doki Panic, which, to the best of my research, was never released outside of Japan. Lost Levels went unreleased Stateside until 1993, when it was included with the Super Mario All-Stars package for SNES. This video from Gaming Historian goes into the full story.

Quite possibly my very favorite video game ever. In 2015, when I was unemployed from August to December, I made it my mission to beat this game, and I had gotten as far as Chocolate Island (about two worlds before Bowser) when my RetroDuo died. I was in no financial shape to get another console at the time, so my dream of finally beating this game has been shelved… Until now. I just bought a SNES, and once I get an RF converter, that muhfucker Bowser is going down.

This is a player-created sequel, but honestly, I would absolutely play it. I’m told the actual sequel, Yoshi’s Island, is great, but the first time I was exposed to it, the person playing kept losing Baby Mario, which made it cry more often than a real baby. As I put it to one of my friends, “Imagine [your son] at his most colicky, now make him cry every thirty seconds. That, as far as I can tell, is Yoshi’s Island.” (And this kid redefined “colicky,” I assure you.)

(Edited: Clearer video.)

Remember when we all thought the N64 had mind-blowing graphics? Oh, we were sweet summer children… (I know, they got better, but the graphics from Goldeneye in particular look like an amateur builder’s pack in Second Life… from ten years ago.

Goldeneye, but modded with Mario.

:) YAY DORKY VIDEO GAME ENTRIES!! Yeah, Lost Levels was HARD! I still have my Super Mario All Stars Cartridge and it still works :) Which is funny because I still don't own SNES Super Mario (Super Mario World). Just... the SNES Old School Mario Games and the N64 Mario Game. Like... I skipped Yoshi, lol.

I've gotten as far as the first castle in Lost Levels, and that's it. With Luigi, no less. I think I actually cried the first time I played that game (I was, like, nine or ten), it was so hard.
