Those discussions with the guys sound fascinating. No wonder I was not a huge success professionally : I did not meet anyone advantageous in college . 😂 I got my credits and concentrated on juggling college / nurses training while also working a full time job. I never had a time to consider connections . I messed up !! But looking back it was just one of the many ways I made mistakes. Live and learn. :-(
If I was talking at a commencement I think I would ask students to focus on having experiences over making money and acquiring “ things” - at least for awhile . To travel and meet people from other cultures .Immerse themselves for a time in those cultures. To build a spiritual life of their choice . Learn to be grateful . We all need something to believe in that is bigger than ourselves. Later earn money but be fiscally responsible and think about retirement . If you spend a dollar : save a dollar . Don’t be in a rush to marry or have children so you have time to truly plan for both. I don’t think it’s true that everyone will step up when they need to ; too many can’t or won’t. People should never underestimate the impact bad parenting has on children. I would encourage them to be very conscious of their physical and emotional health . As you age what you did not take care of when you were young comes back to haunt you with a vengeance. Last but not least I would say to them to never stop learning something new every day because the world is jam packed with wonderful things to know about. We need a daily sense of wonder to keep us going.
